Decay patterns of granite stones in Braga monuments (NW Portugal)
نویسندگان
چکیده
The decay features of thirty-nine monuments built with granite stones and presenting diverse architectural characteristics, date of construction and environment characteristics (including exposition conditions, traffic intensity, etc) are compare in order to discuss decay patterns and susceptibility of granite types applied in architectural works. Decay patterns of biotite-rich medium to fine-grained (frequently porphyritic) granite stones are related to weathering inherited from the quarry (expressed by yellowing), to the presence of heterogeneous elements (enclaves and phenocrysts) and to grain size variations. Fine-grained leucogranitic stones decay is mainly controlled by tectonic foliation. The characteristics of stone application, including how and where was stone used, influence decay patterns by favouring salt pollution concentration, biological colonisation and fixation of atmospheric pollutants. Erosive decay features (linked mainly to salt pollution) and stone coatings (linked to biological action and atmospheric and organic pollution) are widespread decay forms that affect granite stones on Braga buildings. 364 Historical Constructions

Decay factors and patterns of stones in open-air historical sites built of carbonate sedimentary stones
The number of historical open-air sites built of stone are relatively limited in comparison to the other historical artificial in Iran, but these sites include great significance in terms of value, historic and their knowledge of past. Since these stone poen-air sites are generally about two thousand years old, they have been exposed to decay factors for a long time. Many information and data o...
متن کاملA GEOMORPHOLOGY OF lVIEGALITHS: NEOLITHIC LANDSCAPES IN THE ALTO ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL
The Alentejo region of Portugal is known for a high concentration of Neolithic-aged megalithic monuments: tombs (dolmens or antas) and ceremonial features such as standing stones (menhirs) and stone circles (cromleques). Concelltrations of these monuments tend to be found on or near weathered granite terrains. Unloading slabs and remnant corestones appear to be the stones of preference for mega...

Based on the last presented reports of UNSCEAR, inhalation of radon gas and its short-lived decay products is a major contributor to the human exposure from natural radioactivity. Lung cancer is the known effect on human health from exposure to radon in air. Radon is found in outdoor air of buildings of all kinds. The main important isotope of radon is 222Rn. Radon (222Rn) is a noble gas...
متن کاملPrediction of the mechanical behavior of the Oporto granite using Data Mining techniques
The determination of mechanical properties of granitic rocks has a great importance to solve many engineering problems. Tunnelling, mining and excavations are some examples of these problems. The purpose of this paper is to apply Data Mining (DM) techniques such as multiple regressions (MR), artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM), to predict the uniaxial compressive ...
متن کاملSurface modification of a granite building stone in central Rio de Janeiro.
In order to evaluate environmental controls on the soiling formation and decay of building stones a set of mapping and physical and chemical analyses were carried out on granite from a historical church in the polluted centre of Rio de Janeiro. These techniques highlight the increasing of threatening damage on generally perceived as a durable building material, caused by granular disaggregation...
